Mark Fell and Pat Thomas: computer abstraction plus piano improvisation
Computer-driven digital rhythms and clipped synthetic detail from Fell meet Thomas's sharply articulated piano, prepared by decades in free jazz and modernist improvisation. The live recording sits in the space between algorithmic structure and spontaneous attack, with plenty of negative space and sudden collisions rather than a steady groove.
This pair brings together Sheffield electronic abstraction and London-based improvising piano. Reality Is Not A Theory was recorded live at the University of Sheffield in March 2025 and issued by Black Truffle; Thomas is also a member of the free jazz quartet أحمد [Ahmed].
The recording was made in concert at the University of Sheffield in March 2025.
