Free-jazz quartet reworking Ahmed Abdul-Malik and Monk
Based in Amsterdam, Netherlands
The quartet works with blunt repetition, syncopation and hard-driving rhythm, then lets the lines fray into open improvisation. It’s the kind of set where bass and drums lock in like a riff band, while the horns keep pushing the material sideways; the current phase turns toward Monk material after years inside Abdul-Malik’s archive.
أحمد [Ahmed] is a quartet built around excavating and reinhabiting the ideas of Ahmed Abdul-Malik, the bassist and composer who imagined a jazz language linking American, Arabic and East African thought. The festival bio says they have already done six albums of this work, and their 2025 Le Guess Who? set clearly landed hard enough to bring them back for 2026. They started the project by digging through mid-20th-century documents and fragmentary plans left by Ahmed Abdul-Malik.
