Ratliff wrote for the New York Times from 1996 to 2016 and teaches cultural criticism at NYU Gallatin. His books include Coltrane: The Story of a Sound and Every Song Ever, and his 2025 Run the Song was long-listed for the National Book Award for nonfiction.
