Afro-Indigenous art pop spanning chamber music, cumbia and dembow
Based in Toronto, Canada · From Colombia
Pimienta moves between orchestral strings, marimba, percussion, electronic production and Caribbean dance rhythms, with a high, commanding Spanish-language voice at the centre. Her current repertoire connects La Belleza’s Gregorian-inspired chamber writing with Caribenya’s brighter cumbia, dembow and dancehall pulse.
Born in Barranquilla and based in Toronto, Pimienta emerged from a DIY electronic practice rooted in her Afro-Colombian and Indigenous Wayuu heritage. La Papessa won the 2017 Polaris Music Prize; she later composed Lux Aeterna for the New York City Ballet before making the paired orchestral and Caribbean-facing records La Belleza and Caribenya.
With no formal classical training, Pimienta became the first woman of color to compose an original score for the New York City Ballet.
