Valley folk-R&B with elastic vocals and home-recorded edges
Based in Los Angeles, United States
Patterson moves between spacious folk and turn-of-the-millennium R&B-pop, using acoustic guitar, piano, autoharp, clipped loops and synthetic swells. Her voice shifts from a breathy low register into sharp vibrato and wordless cries; the newer Songs From A Valley Girl material is brighter and more rhythmic than The Hermit without losing its ache.
Born in North Carolina and raised in the San Fernando Valley, Patterson began with Pasadena house shows and self-recorded releases before The Hermit reached The FADER’s best-of-2025 list. Songs From A Valley Girl became her first Secretly Canadian release in 2026, connecting her intimate songwriting to the label’s lineage of idiosyncratic singer-songwriters.
While playing Pasadena house shows after high school, she cold-emailed Dijon and producer Henry Kwapis asking to work together.
