Self-produced Swedish art pop built from voices, strings and glitches
From Sweden
Thea Gustafsson layers supple R&B phrasing into choirs of pitched vocals, delicate piano, strings, acoustic guitar, fractured beats and snippets of everyday recordings. Live, those intimate studio collages should expand into a dramatic art-pop set centred on Only Music Makes Me Cry Now.
Gustafsson trained at Musikmakarna and later interned at Avicii's studio before establishing Becky and the Birds as a fully self-written, recorded and produced project. A self-released 2018 debut led to 4AD's Trasslig EP and the 2024 album Only Music Makes Me Cry Now; 4AD first contacted her after hearing a song she posted independently on SoundCloud.
