Anthony Rother revives DATAPUNK live with VPM’s real-time visuals
From Germany
Rother’s DATAPUNK material runs on rigid electro drums, thick analog bass sequences, clipped synth hooks and cool vocoder vocals, with a hard-edged machine-funk swing rather than straight four-to-the-floor pressure. The hybrid set folds live sequencing and revised versions of tracks such as “Father,” “Back Home” and “Punks” into VPM’s synchronized light and digital imagery.
Anthony Rother came out of the Frankfurt–Offenbach electro axis, establishing Psi49Net in 1998 before launching DATAPUNK as a label and artistic phase in the early 2000s. VPM, the creative studio founded by Joan Nieto and Javier Cañal in 2014, brings videomapping and interactive audiovisual design to this retrospective live format.
Rother played what he intended as DATAPUNK’s last show in Amsterdam on January 1, 2015, then revived the project more than a decade later.
