Founded by YoshimiO in 1995, OOIOO grew out of the Boredoms orbit and kept its own language of pop fracture and free-form ensemble playing. Their own site frames the band as moving between audible and inaudible, rhythm and non-rhythm, which is exactly the kind of art-rock logic they brought to Japanese underground circles.
