Cello-led piece for gugak and improvisers
Based in New York City, USA
gyeol puts Lee’s cello inside a chamber-size language of Korean traditional instruments, melodic lines and experimental improvisation. It should read as a shaped performance rather than a jazz set: long tones, friction, sudden lyric turns, and a lot of room for resonance.
Okkyung Lee has spent more than twenty-five years in experimental music, moving between extended technique, composition and improvisation. This project was created for an ensemble of Korean traditional musicians, with Le Guess Who? and Bozar treating it as a new work rather than a repertory reprise.
