Ugandan embaire ensemble for dense interlocking grooves
Based in Nakibembe Village, Uganda
Six players work one giant embaire at once, building interlocking melodic cells and percussion into long, rolling patterns. It sits in the pocket between village ceremony and trance repetition, with the bass end and the high keys locking into a constant shimmer.
They are one of the last remaining groups playing the embaire, and Nyege Nyege has presented them as a core Ugandan tradition act. Their 2023 album came out on Nyege Nyege Tapes, which put them into the label’s wider network of East African experimental and club-adjacent music.
