This is an installation, not a concert: close-up image work paired with breath, exertion, and street sound from Lagos. The material is physical and tight, with the soundtrack doing as much work as the camera on muscle, skin, and gesture.

More about MUSCLE by Karimah Ashadu

Karimah Ashadu is a moving-image artist whose work has appeared at Camden Art Centre, Sadie Coles HQ, and the 60th Venice Biennale. MUSCLE is part of her ongoing study of corporeality, masculinity, patriarchy, and sovereignty, and it frames bodybuilding in Lagos as a self-made image system.
