Egyptian singer channeling shaabi, folk and song cycle forms
Based in Cairo, Egypt
Her voice sits at the center: clear, forceful, and built for long phrases that lean into mawwal-style ornament and song cycle structures. The music around it on Syrr is intimate and layered, with keys, oud, backing vocals and Arabic forms like lullaby, madih and taqtuqa shaping the set.
Maryam Saleh comes out of Cairo’s alternative scene, where she’s long been known for treating Arabic song as a living form rather than a museum piece. Syrr was co-produced with Maurice Louca and Kamilya Jubran, which places her in a serious contemporary Arabic experimental lineage rather than a pop lane.
Syrr was issued on black 12" vinyl with five translucent-paper inserts carrying lyrics and translations.
