Nairobi-born field-recording artist and ambient composer
Based in Berlin, Germany · From Nairobi, Kenya
KMRU’s pieces pull everyday environmental sound into long-form ambient structures: hum, static, distant mechanical tones, air, and field-recorded detail. For WAI8 he’s not playing a normal set so much as building a durational listening space where sound can decay, accumulate, and reset.
Joseph Kamaru makes work from the overlap of field recording, noise, and sound art, with a practice that moved from Nairobi to Berlin. His recent releases on Editions Mego and his own site show him working from environmental capture, electromagnetic tones, and extended composition rather than club form.
His 2023 project Temporary Stored received an honorary mention from Prix Ars Electronica.
