Kologo-driven Frafra song from northern Ghana
Based in Bolgatanga, Ghana
King Ayisoba’s records are built around the kologo’s dry, repeating lines and his high, rough voice in Frafra, Twi and English. On stage that usually means a tight band groove, fast hand percussion and songs that lock into a chant-like cycle rather than a polished pop arc.
He comes out of the Upper East Region of Ghana and turned kologo music into something that traveled widely through Ghana and beyond. Modern Ghanaians was the breakthrough, and the music still points back to traditional kologo playing while pushing it into a contemporary band format. His Bandcamp also places him in Bolgatanga.
A Bandcamp note says the kologo became like an extended part of his body, and that he never spent a day without playing it.
