Veteran French jazz quartet led by Henri Texier
Texier’s quartet is built around upright bass, alto sax, piano, and drums. The writing and improvising come out warm rather than cold, with plenty of melodic motion, folk-derived colour, and the sort of weight that comes from a bassist leading the band from the bottom up.
Henri Texier is one of the central French jazz figures to come out of the post-bop and free jazz decades, and he’s been at it for six decades. Varech, from 1977, is the key marker in the record shop bin: it folds in Celtic, African, Indian, and Middle Eastern colour while keeping a funky pulse, and the 2026 quartet keeps that broad-minded approach alive with his son Sébastien Texier on alto sax, pianist Bruno Angelini, and drummer Gautier Garrigue.
