Dakar percussion meets lyrical Utrecht jazz guitar and open improvisation
Ndong's hand percussion supplies layered West African pulse beneath Van der Pijl's clean, rounded guitar chords and jazz-standard phrasing. Expect a mostly mid-tempo, improvisatory exchange spanning Senegalese rhythm, Latin accents and classical-guitar detail, with space for audience participation.
Ndong grew up in Dakar's Médina, joined the Centre Culturel Blaise Senghor ballet and later played with Asico and reggae groups before moving to the Netherlands in 2014. Van der Pijl came through Codarts and HKU's jazz programmes; De Voorkamer's Culture Shock series introduced the pair, who have continued performing together since their first sessions.
